Online Placement Testing

With in-person placement testing currently suspended, University of Wisconsin Testing Services have developed online unproctored placement tests. To complete the placement tests online follow the steps below:

  1. Verify which tests you are advised to take. UW-Stout requires both the English and Math placement unless you have college credits from high school which can assist with placement.
  2. You will need your campus login to access the registration form. You UW-Stout username is everything before the @ sign in your UW-Stout email address.
  3. Follow this link when you are ready to fill out the registration form to sign up for the online placement tests.

Understanding the Online Placement Tests

  • Within two days of completing the registration form, you will receive an email from Scantron with instructions on how to access the test(s).

  • Registering will give you access to all five tests (Math, English, French, German, and Spanish), but you should only complete the tests required by UW- Stout. These are Math and English unless you plan to take Spanish or German while attending UW-Stout.

  • The exams will be available on demand and you do not need to complete all of your exam(s) in one sitting. Your web browser must be able to accept cookies, JavaScript, and pop-up windows. It is also recommended that you use the most up-to-date version of your web browser.

  • The tests will be untimed, but you will be given information about the normal standardized conditions and urged to comply with time limits as best you are able.

  • Upon completion of the test, you need to click on a button to submit your score(s).  If you do not, your exam will still be open, and no test scores will be sent to UW-Stout.

  • We would prefer that you test on a computer or tablet rather than on a phone. Some parts of the test such as item usage questions and math graphics will be hard to complete on a phone.

In-person testing options will be available again starting July 1. The UW-Stout Testing Center will be open every Monday and Wednesday. Reserved testing times will be at 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM, and 2:30 PM. You can schedule a test time by contacting us at advisement.testing@uwstout.edu.

What to expect when you arrive:

  • Your temperature will be taken when you enter the Advisement Center
  • Masks must be worn in Bowman Hall going to and from the Testing Center
  • Social distancing will be enforced
  • The Testing Center will be wiped down and sanitized before and after each tester.

Residual Placement Testing

The purpose of residual placement testing is to provide the university with information to place students in the correct courses based on their academic skills in particular subjects. Placement tests are given in English, Mathematics, and World Languages.

  • There is a $10 fee for each test. Be sure to print off your payment confirmation when you register for testing.
  • To schedule a time to take a residual placement test or if you have additional questions contact: advisement.testing@uwstout.edu

This form is for students who wish to appeal their mathematics placement level. Students need to complete the required fields in the form and submit it. The form will be automatically routed to the MSCS Department chair, who will review the information provided and determine if it is advisable to increase their math level (note that students can only move up one mathematics placement level). The student and their advisor will receive notification by email with the outcome. If approved, the student will work with their advisor to determine the appropriate course.
