Welcome STEPS Graduates!

Thanks for your continued interest in the STEPS for Girls Program. If you're interested in working at the next STEPS Camp, take a look at the opportunities below and submit your application before the deadline.

We regret that because of unforeseen circumstance, a decision has been made to put the Science, Technology, Engineering Preview Summer (STEPs) summer camp for girls on hiatus for this summer (2020) and possibly beyond.  A challenge has been filed with the federal Office of Civil Rights due to the single-sex nature of the camp, leading to the decision to put STEPS on hold for summer 2020.

Counselor

A STEPS Counselor has many duties working with girls from diverse backgrounds. First and foremost, a STEPS Counselor must be highly interested in working with middle school girls (7th grade) and high school-age junior staff (junior counselors and lab assistants). You will serve as a leader and mentor to these girls.

Being a STEPS Counselor is a strenuous job that requires a mature individual with patience, high energy, flexibility and compassion. STEPS Counselors live on-campus, in the dorms, with the campers for each of the 5-day camp sessions. This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to inspire the lives of many girls. Expertise in science and technology is not required (nor is majoring in science or technology), but a desire to encourage, empower and inspire young girls is a must!

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers.
  • Mentor and guide 10 campers and one junior counselor (10th-grade assistant) throughout each of the 5-day sessions.
  • Ensuring the safety of campers and junior counselors, including first aid and administration of medication.
  • Maintaining the camper schedule – ensuring campers and junior counselors get to meals, classes and activities.
  • Facilitating predesigned camp activities.
  • Managing and running of nightly activities.
  • Being available for campers and junior counselors throughout the day, helping manage potential homesickness, conflict resolution and behavior.
  • Being patient, flexible and willing to have fun while working with the camp’s diverse population.
  • Active engagement and participation in the BOLD STEPS Program**

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and enjoy working with middle school and high school girls.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED and Epi-pen certification*
  • Counselors must have completed 12th grade and be 18 years of age or older. 
  • This is an all-girls overnight camp, so only female applicants will be considered.
  • Past STEPS for Girls Participant preferred, but not required.

Benefits

  • Wonderful experience working in a leadership role with the opportunity to be a positive role-model for middle and high school age girls.
  • Participation in BOLD STEPS Program (Building Opportunities through Leadership Development) **
  • Free room and board during camp sessions and required Saturday stays (1st and 3rd week).
  • Stipend $1800

* Counselors are expected to be CPR/First Aid certified by one of the following organizations and received American Red Cross: Epinephrine training.  Certificates must be provided to STEPS program office prior to official hire.

**Counselors are expected to participate in the BOLD STEPS program throughout camp. This is a great opportunity to further develop and enhance your leadership skills. As part of the program, counselors will be expected to arrive on Saturday morning, prior to the first and third camp session. Completing pre-program assignments (e.g. readings) will be expected.

Counselors must be available for ALL FOUR WEEKS OF STEPS:

Transportation is not provided to/from campus. Parking permits are available free of charge. Room and Board is not provided between camp sessions. Counselors must leave campus on Thursday evenings.

Night Counselor

The STEPS Night Counselor has many duties working with girls from diverse backgrounds. First and foremost, the STEPS Night Counselor must be highly interested in working with middle school girls (going into 7th grade) and high school-age junior staff (junior counselors and lab assistants). You will serve as a leader and mentor to these girls. You will also work with fellow counselors in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Being a STEPS Night Counselor is a strenuous job that requires a mature individual with patience, high energy, flexibility and compassion. The STEPS Night Counselor lives on-campus, during each of the 5-day camp sessions (see below).  This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to inspire the lives of many girls.  Expertise in science and technology is not required (nor is majoring in science or technology), but a desire to encourage, empower and inspire young girls is a must!

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers.
  • Being available for campers and junior counselors throughout the evening hours (overnight), helping manage potential homesickness, conflict resolution and behavior.  Staying up throughout the night to manage the needs of campers and junior counselors (night counselor sleeps during the day).
  • Ensuring the safety of campers and junior counselors, including first aid and administration of medication.
  • Maintaining the camper overnight schedule – making sure campers and junior counselors are in their rooms and sleeping.
  • Facilitating predesigned camp activities (outside of sleeping hours)
  • Managing and running of nightly activities (outside of sleeping hours).
  • Being patient, flexible and willing to have fun while working with the camp’s diverse population.
  • Laundry services and select errands during the day (outside of sleeping hours).
  • Maintain organization of storage room and cleanliness of lounge area.
  • Active engagement and participation in the BOLD STEPS Program**

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and enjoy working with middle school and high school girls.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED and Epi-pen certification*
  • Night Counselor must have completed 12th grade and be 18 years of age or older.

Lab Assistant

We want to invite you to reconnect with the STEPS program as a Lab Assistant.  Please review the following information about the responsibilities and benefits of joining our staff to work with 7th grade girls from diverse backgrounds.   

First and foremost, a STEPS Lab Assistant must be highly interested in working with middle-school girls, college-age counselors and university faculty.  The job entails assisting instructors with preparation and clean-up, assisting campers with laboratory tasks and making sure campers are safe as they accomplish class activities.

Being a STEPS Lab Assistant is a strenuous job that requires a mature individual with patience, high energy and a desire to learn, lead and mentor girls.  Lab Assistants live on campus with other faculty and staff for two or four of the five-day sessions at camp.  This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to participate in engineering activities while changing the lives of many girls.  Preference will be given to applicants who show sustained interest in science, technology and engineering and plan to pursue technical careers.
 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

  • Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers and being a responsible mentor to 40 girls throughout the five-day sessions.
  • Assisting in the facilitation of camp activities.
  • Participating and assisting in the execution of nightly activities.
  • Being patient, flexible and willing to have fun while working with the camp's diverse population.  

Qualifications: 

  • Be self-motivated and enjoy working with middle-school girls. 
  • Must be entering 11th or 12th grade.  
  • Lab Assistants must have attended the STEPS program as a 7th grader and demonstrate a sustained interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). 

Benefits: 

  • Compensation of $400.00 for two, five-day sessions.
  • Free room and board for each session (Sunday-Thursday each week*).
  • Participation in BOLD (Building Opportunities through Leadership Development) STEPS Leadership Program ** 

Transportation is not provided to/from campus. Parking permits are available free of charge. Room and Board is not provided between camp sessions.  LAs must leave campus on Thursday evenings.

*LAs are expected to stay through 7pm each THURSDAY.

As part of the program, counselors will be expected to arrive on Saturday morning, prior to the first and third camp session (room and board provided). Completing pre-program assignments (e.g. readings) will be expected.

 

Junior Counselor

We want to invite you to reconnect with the STEPS program as a Junior Counselor.  Please review the following information about the responsibilities and benefits of joining our staff to work with 7th grade girls from diverse backgrounds.   

First and foremost, a STEPS Junior Counselor must be highly interested in working with middle-school girls and college-age counselors.  The job entails attending classes with campers, assisting with counselor-run activities, stepping in as a lead to give the counselors breaks, and making sure campers are safe getting from class to class without losing momentum. Being a STEPS Junior Counselor is a strenuous job that requires a mature individual with patience, high energy and a desire to design activities on the go.  Junior Counselors will live on campus with the campers for one, five-day session of camp.  This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to participate in engineering activities, while changing the lives of many girls.  Applicants who show sustained interest in science, technology and engineering and plan to pursue technical careers are preferred. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

  • Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers and being a responsible mentor to 10 girls throughout the five-day session.
  • Assisting in facilitation of camp activities.
  • Participating and assisting in execution of nightly activities.
  • Participating as part of the STEPS counseling team.
  • Being patient, flexible and willing to have fun while working with the camp's diverse population.  

Qualifications: 

  • Be self-motivated and enjoy working with middle-school girls. 
  • Must be entering 10th grade.  
  • Junior Counselors must have attended the STEPS program as a 7th grader and demonstrate sustained interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). 

Benefits: 

  • Free room and board for duration of session (Sunday-Thursday). Transportation is not provided to/from campus.
